General information
The department organizes
educational process with PhD students, under the guidance of
supervisor in accordance with the Internal rules for the
development of academic staff at SWU "Neofit Rilski". Training is
consistent with the specifics of the research topic and in
compliance with the approved Individual Curriculum adopted by the
Faculty Council after a decision of the Department Council.
Brief Annotation
The PhD program "Ecology and Environmental
Protection" provides scientific guidance and facilities for
high-level education in both theoretical and applied scientific
topics in the following areas:
- Air pollution and protection. Impact of air pollution on
ecosystems. Air quality assessment;
- Water pollution and protection. Impacts of water pollution on
ecosystems. Functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Bioindication. Water
bodies state assessment;
- Conservation and soil pollution;
- Waste generation and their impact on the environment. Waste
Management. Optimization of waste treatment - introduction of
non-waste technology, reuse and other activities
- Biodiversity. Principles of biodiversity conservation;
- Protected territories and areas.
Competencies of PhD students completed
this program
Successfully defended PhD program acquire skills
and competencies:
- in the area of conservation of the environmental components
including air, waters, soils;
- for research and conservation of biodiversity at the level of
species, habitat and ecosystem;
- for expertises related to bioindication and assessment the
condition of air, water, soil and waste management;
- for application of advanced methods for handling environmental
information, analysis of ecosystems and assessing ecosystem
services provided;
- to create databases, participation in the improvement of
management approaches to environmental protection, development and
management of research projects in the field of ecology and
environmental protection;
- to work in specialized state and scientific institutions.

The Individual Curriculum for PhD studies
includes compulsory courses and several additional courses from the
list above and/or other proposed and approved by the supervisor,
Council of Department "Geography, Ecology and Environmental
protection" and Council of Faculty "Mathematics and Natural
Sciences". The evaluation is conducted with a written exam.
PhD Theses to acquire the educational and scientific degree
"Doctor" are evaluated by scientific juries in accordance with the
Internal rules for the development of academic staff at SWU "Neofit
Rilski".
