Neofit Rilski South-West University prepares qualified experts in Informatics that can apply their knowledge and skills in the area of science, culture, education, and economics in Bulgaria and abroad.

Education process of MSc in Informatics in the area of Bioinformatics includes study of fundamentals of the applied science, combining computer science with modern biology, based on the study of methods and models, by which informatics contributes to the development of molecular biology. The MSc program includes courses which consider the basic tools and methods of Bioinformatics: DNA, protein secvention and structures, genomes and proteomes, databases and information extraction, computer programming, database archives as well as methods for information extraction of database archives.

The MSc program is aimed to basic methods of Bioinformatics, based on enough number of examples, in order to give opportunity to graduates to solve real-world problems in this area. The following topics are considered: the role of Internet, generation of the databases used, the importance of databases and how these databases are accessed and analyzed. Some aspects of Bioinformatics, such as web-based programming, computer modeling, as well as operational systems (UNIX, Linux) and programming languages (Perl) are also included in educational process. Study will be focused on the opportunity to use new information and develop new techniques and methodology for intelligent information analysis, and knowledge finding and processing. These bioinformatics resources will allow effective access of MSc students to genome data, that allow new types of analysis via computer modeling and experimental verification of complex genome networks, which determines the causes of many human diseases.

Graduates of MSc in Informatics in the area of Bioinformatics can successfully realize themselves as: computer programmers, system and network administrators and designers, graphic designers, scientists, experts in databases, experts in software technologies, etc.

At completion of MSc in Informatics degree, students obtain:

  • profound knowledge in the area of Bioinformatics;
  • skills for developing and applying theoretical methods, mathematical modeling and computational techniques for simulating biological systems and processes;
  • good theoretical preparation  in the area of Mathematics and Informatics as well as solid practical skills conforming to modern European standards and requirements;
  • formation of affinity and ability for independent research and design;
  • basis for continuing education at PhD level;
  • good opportunities for realizing as experts in Bulgaria and abroad;
  • thinking style and affinity to the quickly changing requirement of the information society.

Students completed MSc in Informatics degree in the area of Bioinformatics have to possess the following knowledge, skills and competences:

  • to conduct independent research, to model real processes and make computer automation systems for information maintenance;
  • to use mathematical models and software packages for solving real economic, engineering and management problems in continuous and discrete macrosystems;
  • to take part in development of program products and packages;
  • to adapt and introduce program products and systems;
  • to solve various optimization problems.
