The geographical information systems represent a modern branch of scientific and applied research with a broad practical application in various fields. This determines both the broad scientific interest in this modern technology, but also the diverse areas of applied learning in higher education.

The master program expands the fundamental theoretical knowledge of the basic bachelor course in GIS. The rapid development of the technologies which provide spatial information and their processing requires students to acquire more practical knowledge and skills for presentation and analysis of digital information using GIS technology. This requires in-depth study of the various methods and other related GIS technologies that provide spatial data.

The program aims to prepare professionals that will meet the requirements of the Bulgarian and European institutions to work with spatial data. The wider range of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of GIS and remote sensing will help students solve their professional problems from the fields of geography, ecology and environmental protection.

Fundamental prerequisite for achieving the educational goals is the structure and content of the curriculum. The curriculum is structured in two semesters with a minimum of 60 credits. There is a balance between the general and the specialized courses that are oriented towards specific areas of application.

The courses are organized into two groups - compulsory and elective, whereas the workload is well balanced. In the second semester is dedicated to the practice. The training ends with the development of a thesis.

The specialized courses are grouped into three main groups - Fundamentals and principles of GIS; Sources of data in GIS; modeling in GIS environment. This provides both basic training, as well as training for the practical use of geographic information systems. The elective subjects are divided into two groups that provide training in various application areas of GIS.

Once well utilized this knowledge gives possibilities for a successful future development of students who can already work as specialists in their field and can apply GIS technology. Graduates can find their realization in different ministries and their regional structures, municipal and district administrations, different departments, which use GIS technology to visualize, to process and analyze spatial information.
