Student Round Table "Environmental consciousness.
Looking East and West" March
26,
2015,
South-West
University. The Round Table was organized by the Center
for New Media and Digital Culture and the Department of Philosophy
and Political Science at SWU "Neofit Rilski". Students in
Philosophy, Culture and Media and Cultural Studies took part in the
discussions.
In their reports and talks the participants discussed the
specifics and diversity of the understanding of the environmental
awareness as an intersection point between social and economic, and
as an expression of the state of the inner world of a human being,
his values, attitudes and way of life. Students' attention was
focused on the consideration of social (as a manifestation of a
human being, and as a responsibility and tolerance) and economic
(as opposed to the idea of saving) as a factor polluting the
environment. The problem of the harmonious unity in the
relationship between human and nature, in terms both of the
external action of human behavior and deep symbols of internal
human myths was revealed as well. Within the discussion,
interesting comparisons of the environmental awareness of the
traditional societies and the modern person; of shaman's
consciousness and schizophrenic consciousness; of
Astronauts, overcoming the challenges of space and Psychonauts
flying into the depths of the mental world were made. The Western
and Eastern myths concerning human-nature relationship were
compared, from the tale of Little Red Riding Hood to the Eastern
myths about dragons. In the conversation about the Wim Wenders'
film "Salt of the Earth" dedicated to the Brazilian photojournalist
Sebastião Salgado, the question of nature as a beginning and
ultimate refuge, where we can survive, was raised. The bilateralism
of nature and our relationship with it was discussed as well - on
one hand it feeds us and gives us the most valuable goods and, on
the other hand, it needs our protection and support; it is a wild
place and the same time is a place of peace and beauty, opposite to
the violence and atrocities which we are able to cause to each
other, a place where we can find inner harmony, where people remain
capable of exhibiting humanism. The understanding of the
relationship between photography and ecological education expressed
by the Canadian photographer Edward Bartinski, who calls everyone
to join the global conversation about sustainable living, also
evoked the interest of the students. Activation of the awareness
and behavior of young people towards care and love of nature,
towards changes in their daily behavior was agreed to be one of the
main goals of environmental education. Roundtable participants were
unanimous that for young people it is important to be convinced of
the need to build up ecological culture as well as civic and
cultural values. The development of collaborative "green projects,"
promoting innovative environmentally sound activities can
significantly contribute to this.
On the 23th of April a
seminar for BA and PhD students "Science and Spirituality: Eastern
and Western Interpretations" was held in SWU. The seminar
was organized by the Department of Philosophy and Political
Sciences and the Center for New Media and Digital Culture. The
presentations at the seminar were aimed at the polarizations of
understanding science and spirituality in the life of modern man.
Attendees pondered over the issue of the merger and the separation
of these two human qualities. On one side of the history we find
UNIFICATION caused by the ecstatic experience of traditional adept,
while the other - SPLITTING of disciplines thanks to the rational
view of the modern scientist.
